Tuesday was a cloudy day in Cedar Rapids. It sprinkled rain off and on the entire day. I visited four sites on Tuesday.
Team 4 is working at an assisted living place called Kingston Hill. There project is to reroof the garage behind their main building. The previous roof was in pretty bad shape without tar paper, so they pulled off the old shingles, laid down tar paper, and were nailing in shingles while I was there. It was really cool to see their entire team working on both sides of the roof – while some repainted the parking curbs. They told me how friendly everyone had been who drove by. The across the street neighbor saw them working all Monday and so she made them a pecan pie to thank them for helping her neighbors.
Teams 5 and 9 are working at Cedar House this week. Cedar House is a beautiful old home that is now used as a homeless shelter. Team 5 is working on repainting the entire interior of the house. While I was there they were spread out throughout the house painting. It was really good to see the progress that they had made in a day and a half. Team 9 is ripping out and replacing some sidewalk behind the house and doing some carpentry on the back porch.
Team 9 wasn’t at the Cedar House on Tuesday because they had been called to the farm! One of Matthew 25’s big projects is urban farming. There are tons of lots that are empty after the flood – so Matthew 25 is planting these farms so low income people have a healthy source of inexpensive food. It’s very cool. When I caught up with Team 9 they had been to a few farms and were weeding.
Finally, I visited Team 8. Team 8 worked on the farm on Monday and were working at Matthew 25’s offices on Tuesday. They were inside painting and working on their second coat while I was there. Their team leader, Jim, had also been teaching his team a line dance, which I had the pleasure of getting to see. Very fun and cool team.
Everyone returned home to clean up, rest, and get ready for dinner. We drove once again to First Pres Cedar Rapids for dinner, which was very tasty lasagna prepared by our awesome kitchen team! We celebrated the five birthdays that happen while we are on Go & Serve with cupcakes and singing. We headed back to Coe College and played games, while I planned worship with the juniors. Our theme for the day was “Call Denied” and we talked about the story of Jonah and how he ran away from God’s call. We had two great testimonies for worship and sang our hearts out. The juniors did a great job! Then we had small groups and were off to bed. Tuesday was a solid day and I’m looking forward to what Wednesday will bring.
Continued prayers appreciated for our trip. God bless!
