Greetings from Alma, Michigan!
Go & Serve 2013 is off and running. All of the vans arrived in Alma yesterday between 5 and 6 PM after a five and half hour drive. The drive was full of changing scenery, get to know you games, and a lot of naps. We settled into our dorms at Alma College and walked 2 blocks down the street to the First Pres of Alma where the college provided us with a pizza dinner. Afterwards we played some high energy games with 141 people… entertaining… to get all of our energy out from sitting all day. Before it was time for bed, we gathered for worship and heard about our theme for the week – Faith <-> Works. We’re looking at the relationship between faith and works this week and using part of James 2 as our passage.
14 Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? 15 For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved 16 and say, “Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!” and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup – where does that get you? 17 Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense? 18 I can already hear one of you agreeing by saying, “Sounds good. You take care of the faith department, I’ll handle the works department.” Not so fast. You can no more show me your works apart from your faith than I can show you my faith apart from my works. Faith and works, works and faith, fit together hand in glove.
Then we split into small groups to discuss our day. Lights out was a bit difficult, but I assume it will get easier and easier as the week progresses and tiredness ensues.
We just finished eating breakfast and now everyone has headed off to their worksites for Day 1. I’ll have a lot more pictures tomorrow. God bless friends!
